User Types
TetherX has five user types. Choose the appropriate type when creating accounts to ensure proper security and access control.
| Type | Summary |
|---|---|
| User | Staff with limited access to specific cameras - receptionists, security guards |
| Operator | Control-room or ARC agent for professionally monitored sites, zone-restricted like a User but with the operator events console |
| Admin | System owner with full control - can manage users and settings |
| Integrator | Security installer with Admin-like access, usually revoked after commissioning |
| Guest | Temporary access via shared link - no account needed |

Tip: Guest access isn't shown above because guests can only view specific shared content - they have no account and no configurable permissions.
Notifications by User Type
Which alerts each user type receives - and which are scoped to the cameras and sites a user can access - is documented in one place: Who Receives Notifications. Operators are the exception worth noting here: they do not receive push or email notifications and instead work live events through the operator console.
When to Use Each Type
User
For staff who need to view cameras or footage but shouldn't change system settings.
Examples: Receptionist, security guard, police officer with temporary access
Key points:
- Access limited to specific Cameras you choose
- Cannot modify system configuration
- Each permission (audio challenge, arm/disarm) must be explicitly enabled
Operator
Choose Operator when the site is professionally monitored by a control room or Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). Operators watch live and recorded Events across the sites assigned to them and handle each one in the dedicated operator console. See Control Rooms for how TetherX runs control-room, ARC and GSOC operations, and the operator guide for the day-to-day workflow.
Examples: Control-room operator, ARC agent, remote video-monitoring agent
Key points:
- Access limited to specific Cameras you choose, exactly like a User
- Opens the dedicated operator events console for handling events
- Events default to list view showing open events, with sound alerts on
In the operator console an operator can:
- Send a report to the site contacts, call a contact, or escalate the event to a supervisor
- Trigger deterrence on the camera (siren, two-way talk, pre-recorded warning, or site-wide Garrison)
- Record the action taken (observed, report sent, emergency services dispatched or arrived)
- Flag an event's footage to keep it (30 days, 90 days or 1 year), with the flag clearing itself when the period ends
- Return an event to the queue so a different operator can pick it up
Supervisor: flag an operator as a supervisor in their permissions. Supervisors are the escalation target: they receive Call Supervisor calls and the Send to On-Call Supervisor reports operators raise. Supervisors are marked with a badge on the Users list.
Admin
For system owners and decision makers who need full control.
Examples: Business owner, IT manager, facilities director
Key points:
- Full access to all Cameras, Users, and settings
- Receives login notifications when other users sign in
- Can lock out Integrators by disabling Support Access
Warning: Only grant Admin access to fully trusted individuals - they can delete footage and remove users.
Integrator
For security professionals who install and maintain systems.
Examples: Security installer during commissioning, ongoing maintenance provider
Key points:
- Similar to Admin but can be locked out at any time
- Access to Partner Portal, Quote Tool, and installation statistics
- Logins don't trigger notifications to Admins (but appear in Audit Log)
Warning: Don't choose Integrator if you're the system owner - use Admin. Integrator access is designed to be disabled after commissioning, which could lock you out of your own system.
Guest
For temporary, no-account access to specific content.
Examples: Police viewing incident footage, insurance assessor reviewing a claim
Key points:
- Access via shared link - no login required
- Can only view the specific Events shared with them
- Links can be set to expire
